Uhl T. Mann Award—Given to individuals for excellence in treatment plant operations and maintenance. There are five awards categories, based on plant flows:
- 0.0 – 0.5 MGD
- 0.6 – 1.0 MGD
- 1.1 – 10.0 MGD
- 10.1 – 50.0 MGD
- over 50 MGD.
It can be awarded for operations or maintenance.
Award Criteria:
- Must be a current member of the New York Water Environment Association.
- Monthly reports
- Compliance with all ambient and effluent standards.
- Compliance with SPDES permit.
- Safety Record.
- Public Education efforts.
- Pretreatment program.

Milton T. Hill Award—Recognizes a current Association Member for outstanding contributions to the education and training of wastewater utility personnel.
Award Criteria:
- Must be a current member of the New York Water Environment Association.
- Development and implementation of program which enhances the status of operating personnel and contributes to their individual and corporate development.
- Efforts must be above and beyond the normal call of their job responsibilities.
2024 Nominations Period Ended October 1.
Outstanding Operator of the Year Award—Presented annually to a current frontline Association Member who has demonstrated extraordinary dedication in the day-to-day operation of a water resource recovery utility, successful solution to a problem, or a significant contribution to the wastewater field.
Award Criteria:
1) Must be a NYS certified operator or have total operations experience of 4 years.
2) Must be a current member of the New York Water Environment Association.
3) Must demonstrate a passion for excellence and have made outstanding contributions to the operation and maintenance of a utility.
2024 Nominations Period Ended October 1.
Collection System Operation & Maintenance Award—Recognizes a municipal or public authority wastewater collection system.
Award Criteria:
- Outstanding contribution to evaluation, rehabilitation, design, or construction of wastewater collection systems.
- Nominee must be endorsed by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
2024 Nominations Period Ended October 1.
Collection System Operator Award—Given to an Association Member for an outstanding contribution to the evaluation, rehabilitation, design, or construction of collection facilities.
Award Criteria:
- Must be a current member of the New York Water Environment Association.
- Documentation and supporting information on the contribution.
- The nominee’s area of service must have been in the following areas:
- Management
- Overall planning
- Operation and maintenance
- Facility design
- Education
- Training
- Research

Ernest R. Carroll Safety Award—Annual recognition of an Association Member for significant contributions in the field of safety.
Award Criteria:
1. Outstanding plant safety record.
- Development and promotion of plant safety education programs
- Compliance with OSHA and/or New York State Department of Labor regulations.
2024 Nominations Period Ended October 1.
Collection Systems Safety Award—Given annually in honor of outstanding safety activities, programs, and accomplishments in the field of wastewater collection systems.
Award Criteria:
- Exemplary safety record and proactive safety program.
- Outstanding safety record as shown by accidents and loss of time due to accidents.
- Proactive safety program at facility.
- Safety procedures and practices are priority one for all work in the system and part of employee evaluation program.
- Compliance with OSHA and/or New York State Department of Labor regulations.

Alfred J. Schmidt Wastewater Treatment Facility Safety Award—Presented annually to celebrate outstanding safety activities, programs and accomplishments at a wastewater treatment facility.
Award Criteria:
- Exemplary safety record and proactive safety program.
- Outstanding safety record as shown by accidents and loss of time due to accidents.
- Proactive safety program at facility.
- Safety procedures and practices are priority one for all work in the system and part of employee evaluation program.
- Compliance with OSHA and/or New York State Department of Labor regulations.
