Public Education and Outreach Awards

Public Outreach Award—Highlights an Association Member for significant accomplishments in prompting awareness and understanding of water environment issues among members and general public through the development and implementation of public education programs. There are two categories: Individual and Organizations.

Award Criteria (same for individuals and organizations)

  1. Must be a current member of the New York Water Environment Association.
  2. Documented achievements of public education activities in the water environment field.
  3. Identification and description of exceptional efforts to educate the public on water environment issues.
  4. The activity or effort must have been implemented within the two years immediately prior to nomination. Specific programs are eligible for nomination only once.

2024 Nominations Period Ended October 1.

 

Robert D. Hennigan Water Hero Award—Given annually and inspired by Robert D. Hennigan’s leadership as executive director of the New York Water Environment Association, it celebrates an Association Member who has made a significant contribution to water quality.

Award Criteria:

  1. Member of the New York Water Environment Association for a minimum of three (3) years.
  2. Demonstrated a consistent, sustained and meaningful contribution to water quality through their everyday responsibilities, actions and efforts.

Kenneth Allen Memorial Award—Given annually for papers or presentations by Association Members describing work of a research or engineering nature and can include multiple co-authors, but the primary author must be an Association Member.

Award Criteria:​

  1. The primary author or presenter must be a current member of the New York Water Environment Association.
  2. The paper and/or presentation must be of sufficient high quality to merit recognition.
  3. For a paper, the material must be published in an Association publication. The primary author must submit a manuscript for review and evaluation.
  4. Presentations given at either the Spring or Annual Conference, or New York City Watershed Science and Technical Conference are eligible for consideration for this award. At the Conference, the moderators of each session should consider if any of the presentations made at their session might be eligible for an award. A copy of the presentation must be provided for review in either hard copy or electronic format and independent reviews of the presentation must be provided by the Program Committee.

Linn H. Enslow Memorial Award—Presented annually for non-member papers or presentations pertaining to work of a research or engineering nature.

Award Criteria:​

  1. The primary author or presenter is NOT a member of the New York Water Environment Association.
  2. The paper and/or presentation must be of sufficient high quality to merit recognition.
  3. For a paper, the material must be published in an Association publication. The primary author must submit a manuscript for review and evaluation.
  4. Presentations given at either the Spring or Annual Conference, or New York City Watershed Science and Technical Conference are eligible for consideration for this award. At the Conference, the moderators of each session should consider if any of the presentations made at their session might be eligible for an award. A copy of the presentation must be provided for review in either hard copy or electronic format and independent reviews of the presentation must be provided by the Program Committee.

Charles Agar Memorial Award—Annual recognition of Association Members for papers or presentations concerning wastewater management, which is not of a research and engineering nature, but rather deals with public education or general water quality.

Award Criteria:​

  1. The primary author must be a member of the New York Water Environment Association.
  2. The paper and/or presentation must be of sufficient high quality to merit recognition.
  3. For a paper, the material must be published in an Association publication. The primary author must submit a manuscript for review and evaluation.
  4. Presentations given at either the Spring or Annual Conference, or New York City Watershed Science and Technical Conference are eligible for consideration for this award. At the Conference, the moderators of each session should consider if any of the presentations made at their session might be eligible for an award. A copy of the presentation must be provided for review in either hard copy or electronic format and independent reviews of the presentation must be provided by the Program Committee.

Lewis Van Carpenter Memorial Award—Recognizes papers or presentations describing operations work in the field of wastewater treatment, authored by operations personnel.

Award Criteria:

  1. The primary author or presenter must be facility operations personnel.
  2. The paper and/or presentation must be of sufficient high quality to merit recognition.
  3. For a paper, the material must be published in an Association publication. The primary author must submit a manuscript for review and evaluation.
  4. Presentations given at either the Spring or Annual Conference, or New York City Watershed Science and Technical Conference are eligible for consideration for this award. At the Conference, the moderators of each session should consider if any of the presentations made at their session might be eligible for an award. A copy of the presentation must be provided for review in either hard copy or electronic format and independent reviews of the presentation must be provided by the Program Committee.​

Humanitarian Assistance Award—Presented to a current Association member, it recognizes outstanding leaders (individuals and organizations) who demonstrate a strong commitment and direct action to humanitarian assistance efforts by promoting and creating opportunities in the water sector in order to overcome challenges, both locally and internationally. There are two categories: Individuals and Organizations.

Award Criteria:​

  1. Individual only – Must be a current member of the New York Water Environment Association
  2. Must have accomplishments in one or both of the following areas:
  3. Documented achievements of public education activities related to humanitarian efforts in the water environment field. Nomination should identify and describe exceptional efforts to educate the public on humanitarian water environment issues; or
  4. Significant contributions in any of the following areas: disaster relief, emergency humanitarian response, economic development, health, environmental, and education. Examples would include volunteering for Engineers Without Borders, disaster recovery efforts domestically and abroad that relate to water quality.
  5. The activity or effort must have been implemented within the two years immediately prior to nomination
  6. Specific programs may only be awarded once.
