Distinguishing Features of the Class: This is important responsible technical work performed in the operation of the Water Board’s Wastewater Treatment Plant. The work involves a variety of duties and responsibilities on an assigned shift with full responsibility for the efficient operation and operational
maintenance of the Wastewater Treatment Plant with facilities for physical-chemical treatment process. The work is performed under general supervision of a superior qualified to be in charge of the plant.
Supervision is exercised over Water/Wastewater Plant Operator Trainee and other subordinates as assigned. The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator performs related work as required.
Typical Work Activities:
- Operates and maintains equipment related to pumping, primary treatment, grit removal, chemical coagulation (polymer) and phosphorus removal (ferric chloride), chemical addition (lime and sulfuric acid) for pH control, activated carbon system consisting of 28 down flow beds, odor control, disinfection (sodium hypochlorite), solids handling, dewatering and stabilizing (lime addition), and carbon transfer;
- Makes minor repairs to machinery and equipment;
- Records readings from meters and gauges;
- Treats and disposes of sludge;
- Adds chemicals to sewage;
- Takes samples of sewage and performs testing;
- Makes necessary tests for control of plant operation;
- Assists in the instruction of trainees;
- Supervises the work of other subordinate employees;
- Keeps a log of plant operations and related records;
- Performs custodial duties in connection with maintenance of buildings and grounds in the immediate operational area;
- Performs preventative maintenance diagnostics and preventative duties such as monitoring equipment for excessive vibration or high temperatures;
- Monitors and assesses equipment performance and maintains process operations by using total production operation principles of CLAIR (clean, lubricate, adjust, inspect, repair);
- Performs minor electrical and instrumentation responsibilities such as calibration of instruments;
- Performs minor service and repairs to mechanical equipment such as replacing V-belts on small rotating equipment, disconnecting/reconnecting pipes, removing/installing small equipment, minor plumbing repairs, ;
- Ensures cleanliness and safety of facilities by maintaining and cleaning work areas and promoting
Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics: Good knowledge of the practices used in the equipment required in the operation and maintenance of a Wastewater Treatment Plant with NYSDEC facility point score of 76 or greater for physical chemical treatment process; working knowledge of the principles and applications of physics, chemistry and bacteriology as applied to sewage treatment and disposal; skill in the operation and repair of pumps, valves and related mechanical and electrical equipment; ability to rad, understand and record data from gauges, scales and meters; ability to make routine laboratory and field tests for control of plant operation; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; mechanical aptitude; alertness and dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma;
Special Requirements:
- Possession of a valid New State Driver’s License throughout
- Possession of a Grade 3 license approved by the Commissioner, Department of Environmental Conservation.
Rate of Pay: $22.73 – 24.86/hour, $47,287.97 – 51,694.91 Annually plus excellent benefits.
