Senior Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator (4A) – Huntington, NY

The Town of Huntington is currently accepting applications for the Senior Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator of the Huntington Sewer District (HSD).

The HSD operates the Huntington Sewage Treatment Plant, a Type 4A Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) located in Halesite, NY. The WWTP is a 2.6 MGD permitted facility with primary clarifiers, sequencing batch reactors, pre- and post-equalization, UV disinfection, anaerobic digestion and sludge dewatering.  An on-site scavenger waste facility pretreats wastewater prior to discharge to the treatment plant.

The Town will consider candidates for this position that possess a current New York State 4A Water Operator License. All candidates should have previous Waste Water Treatment Plant and management experience.   Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, overseeing the Waste Water Treatment Plant, reporting, and daily operations of the Sewer Department. In addition to supervising daily operational activities, the incumbent also oversees the administration of specialized programs, including industrial pretreatment, trucked waste, sludge disposal, head works loading analyses, chemical bulk storage, petroleum bulk storage, and anaerobic digestion.  The work is performed under the general supervision of the Director and Deputy Director of the Department of Environmental Waste Management with leeway allowed for planning work methods and dealing with emergency conditions.  Supervision is exercised over five WWTP operators.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs supervisory work involving the responsibility for the efficient operation and maintenance of one or more wastewater treatment plants or works as an operator at a wastewater treatment plant with a point score of 76 points or greater which uses the activated sludge process or similar suspended growth nitrogen removal.  Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

  • Supervises and/or participates in the starting and stopping of pumps, motors, blowers, and related machines and equipment; inspects and tests equipment for efficient and proper functioning; makes minor repairs to the machinery and equipment;
  • Records readings from meters and gauges;
  • Assembles data needed to prepare the monthly discharge monitoring report.
  • Supervises and/or participates in the treatment and disposal of sludge; directs changes in equipment usage or chemical compositions; directs sampling of wastewater for testing; makes necessary tests for control of plant operations;
  • Instructs, trains and supervises support personnel in plant operations; enforces policy and safety rules;
  • Maintains a log of plant operations and related records;
  • Supervises and participates in duties connected with the maintenance of buildings and grounds;
  • Provides quick response and direction to plant operators in treatment process emergency situations;
  • Participates in preparation of Huntington Sewer District budget.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the practices and equipment used in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant with a point score of 76 or greater which utilizes the activated sludge process; thorough knowledge of the principles and applications of physics, chemistry and bacteriology as applied to wastewater treatment and disposal; skill in the operation and repair of pumps, valves, and related mechanical and electrical equipment; ability to read, understand and record data from gauges, scales, and meters; ability to make routine laboratory and field tests for control of plant operations; ability to under­stand and carry out oral and written instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a Type 4A Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator’s certificate issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and three (3) years of operating experience in a wastewater treatment plant which utilizes the activated sludge process with a Plant score of 76 or higher.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Candidates must maintain a Grade 4A Certificate issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, while employed in this title.

At the time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.

The appointment will be provisional based on training & experience and a written test may be required by Suffolk County Civil Service for permanent appointment to the position.

The salary and benefits are competitive with the public sector market including but not limited to the following:

  • Hourly Salary Range: $43.03 to $49.62 commensurate with experience
  • 40 Hour work week with paid on-call consultation with shift operators as needed
