MOTOR EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I
QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: One (1) year of full-time paid experience, or its part-time equivalent, in the operation of motor equipment.
SUBSTITUTION – EXPERIENCE: Possession of vocational or technical certification, or higher, in, Heavy Equipment Operation or Diesel Technology/Power Mechanics may substitute for the one (1) year of paidexperience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT AT TIME OF APPLICATION: Possession of valid Class B New York State Commercial Driver’s License with no restrictions at the time of application, and maintenance of such license throughout the tenure of employment in the position.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Employees in this class perform public work activities/duties in connection with the operation of construction and maintenance equipment classified as Motor Equipment I. However, other equipment may be operated on a relief or training basis. Employees of this class are required to perform a variety of laboring and helper duties. Work is performed under direct supervision of a higher-ranking employee. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
Operates motor equipment such as: tractors (may have rotary mower attached, carpenters’ truck, paint truck, single axle dump truck, paint truck (stake body), patch roller, front end loaders, bulldozers, backhoes, compactors (rated at 100 horsepower or less), compressors, sewer cleaners, street sweepers, and other types of equipment classified as light duty used in the construction and maintenance of highways and other public works projects;
Operates equipment and participates in material hauling and snow removal activities such as sanding roads, acting as “wing-person”, shoveling, etc.;
Cuts trees, weeds and bushes, does manual road patching and traffic flagging in conjunction with highway maintenance;
Occasionally operates heavier construction equipment;
Assists in the installation of guard rails, posts and culvert pipes;
Performs a variety of some skilled tasks such as helper to masons, carpenters, and mechanics;
Performs physical labor such as loading trucks, digging ditches, cutting trees and brush, flushing sewers, cleaning culverts, and raking blacktop;
Cleans and oils equipment.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good
knowledge of the operation and care of trucks and other equipment classified as Motor Equipment I; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions; willingness to respond to emergencies and perform overtime work; willingness to work in adverse weather conditions; dependability; mechanical aptitude; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
