Marissa Goldblatt, of Plainview, NY, is this year's recipient of a $10,000 scholarship from the New York Water Environment Association (NYWEA).

NYWEA is a non-profit, environmental and educational organization that helps create and support clean water programs throughout the country. Included in the organization's members are civil engineers, environmental engineers, chemists, biologists, government officials, students, lawyers, and professors. NYWEA aims to promote public knowledge of water quality management programs, and to advance this knowledge through the support of research.

Each year, the NYWEA awards a $10,000 scholarship to an eligible high school senior in New York who is enrolled in a full-time B.S. or B.E. degree program with an emphasis on environmental issues. Only one applicant receives this scholarship each year. The judging is based on commitment to the environment, academic performance, and an interest in studying and pursuing a career focused on environmental issues.

Goldblatt, a senior at Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School and this year's class valedictorian, will attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the fall. Among the various activities she is involved in and the awards she has received, Goldblatt is an INTEL semifinalist, a member of National Honor Society, and works for the school newspaper. She plans to study chemical engineering with a concentration on environmental issues.
