Lucy Grassano Memorial Scholarship
Lucy was active in support of members of the Association and was a long time employee of the City of New York. The scholarship will be used to further the career of secretaries and administrative assistants in the government.

Lucy joined the City of New York in 1973 as a typist. She rose through the ranks and became a Principal Administrative Assistant. Wherever Lucy was, she helped the men and women she worked for, and with, to succeed. She retired as in 2002 and passed away in July of 2007.

To keep the memory of her alive and to help other deserving individuals achieve their educational goals, over $10,000 was raised to establish the scholarship in Lucy's name.

The Lucy Grassano Memorial Scholarship Fund will be offering scholarships to secretaries, office aides, administrative assistants and principal administrative assistants who show a commitment to government service to obtain training to improve themselves.

Instructions for Applicants

1. Fill out the entire application. Be sure to type or print neatly. It is very important that you do not leave any blanks.
2. Provide a letter verifying enrollment or acceptance in a program on the sponsor's stationary.
3. Attach Letters of Recommendation (two).
4. Attach a resume.
5. Attach requested essay.
6. Submit your completed application no later than December 2. Awards will be announced in February..

Scholarship Policy and Procedures

Objective: It is the Committee's objective to award scholarships to applicants pursuing self-improvement who show a commitment to government service.

Applications must be accompanied by:

1. A Letter of Recommendation on agency letterhead from the applicant's employer.
2. A Letter of Recommendation from a personal reference (not family).
3. A Resume
4. Required Essay

1. Applicants submit their scholarship application to the NYWEA who will check the application to ensure completion and then forward the application to the Committee for review. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
2. To be eligible for a scholarship, the student must meet the criteria outlined in the Instructions for Applicants, listed above.
3. Selection Criteria:

1. Interest in Government Service and Career Objective (Essay): Demonstrates a commitment to government service and what the scholarship would do to help their career.
2. Academic Potential: Value of courses taken or planned.
3. Other Activities: Activities in programs and organizations demonstrating leadership abilities.
4. Character: Demonstrates an overall sense of good moral character and citizenship.

4. The Committee consists of family, friends and colleagues of Lucy Grassano.
5. Once the nominee's application is accepted by the Committee, the Applicant will be notified by letter. Incomplete applications will be returned to the applicant.
6. To indicate that they have accepted the scholarship, Recipients must sign and return the "Terms of Scholarship."
7. Recipient will be eligible to receive awards in subsequent years.
8. Successful applicants will be awarded their Scholarship by a representative of the Committee at an appropriate function.
9. Funds will be released directly to the Recipient as soon as an acceptable copy of a receipt for attendance of an approved program is received.
